HISTORIC FREDONIA, ALABAMA

Fredonia is once again the Town of Fredonia!

The votes have been taken and the declarations have been signed!  Fredonia once again is in possession of its charter.

Brief Background

In October of 2008 the Chambers County Commission petitioned Probate Court to forfeit the Charter of the Town of Fredonia.  The Probate Court ordered that Fredonia’s charter be forfeited. A majority of the people in the town decided that they wanted to reinstate the town and, in order to do so, would first have to reverse the forfeiture. “Free Fredonia Community” was formed and fundraising begun, an attorney was hired and an appeal was filed to reverse the forfeiture.  While waiting for our case to come before the court, an election happened, and a number of the new commissioners agreed that the forfeiture should be reversed.  In July of 2011 the Chambers County Commission voted to reverse our forfeiture.  On July 26, 2011 the court returned us to the status we were in before forfeiture.

Our charter is valid once again.  In order to protect our charter and protect our rural lifestyle, we are now in the process of seeking reinstatement through the Probate Court.

Chambers County’s oldest settled community is raising its sleepy head and dusting off a century of dust.  Follow our progress and see where we go.

And while doing so, be sure to join us for our annual Fredonia Heritage Day and our famous Bar-B-Que!
